๐ง Thinking in your Second Language

If youโve ever wondered if you could think in English someday, Iโm here to reassure you that itโs possible. I know because I think and speak in Korean every day. Of course, thinking in Korean didnโt happen overnight. I used to only be able to say the most basic things like, โHello,โ โDid you eat?โ and โLetโs meet again.โ So, there really wasnโt much for me to think about in Korean. I donโt know when I started thinking in Korean exactly, but it happened gradually. I tend to be someone who thinks a lot, so I think that helped me. I also regularly talk to myself when Iโm alone.

As I got more comfortable speaking Korean, I started to speak to myself in Korean. This is a great way for you to practice English without worrying about what others might think of you. Itโs easy to remember phrases like, โLetโs go brush our teethโ or โTime for lunch,โ and if you say this to yourself often enough, you wonโt need to translate them anymore. You will just think about them naturally.

I think what has helped me the most is surrounding myself with Korean friends and attending language exchanges. When Iโm in a Korean environment, I canโt help but think in Korean. It would take way too much time to listen to Korean, translate it to English, think in English, and translate it back to Korean. Sometimes I make mistakes and sometimes I donโt know what someone says, but instead of wasting time trying to figure out what they meant, I just ask them to explain it in Korean.

This is a great way to improve your thinking and speaking skills! Ask people to explain difficult words or concepts in simple terms. Part of learning a new language is that youโre going to make mistakes. Donโt feel embarrassed! Everyone is learning just like you and tackling a new language is very admirable.

As for other ways that might help you think in English, consider labeling common items around your house with their English name. This will prompt you to think in English, even when youโre washing the dishes or taking out the trash. Spend time in English by watching English TV shows or listening to English music. And, if you have a pet, try speaking to them in English! I only speak to my dog in Korean, so whenever I see him, I automatically speak Korean. Sometimes, it even feels like Iโve forgotten English! Learning a new language is tough, but donโt give up. It is so worth it!
