๐What Was Halloween Like Growing Up in America?

Like most American kids, Halloween was a big part of my childhood. You get to dress up and collect lots of candy! Whatโs not to love? My family celebrated by dressing up and trick-or-treating door to door.

Choosing a costume was always exciting. I dressed up as Disney princesses like Pocahontas and Jasmine, and one year, my brothers and I went as Power Rangers! The best part? My mom made all our costumes.

On Halloween night, my parents took us around the neighborhood. We only visited houses with their porch lights on because that meant they were handing out candy. People usually answered the door, complimented our costumes, and gave us candy before we moved on. Some neighbors were famous for giving out the best treats!

Many people also went all out decorating their homes with colored lights, spiderwebs, and spooky decorations. Some even had motion-activated decorations that jumped out at you! I remember one house that scared me so much that I couldn't even approach the door.

After trick-or-treating, my brothers and I would spread out our candy and check our haul. My mom sometimes inspected it for safety, and then my dad would take his โdad tax,โ picking out his favorite candy first. My brothers and I would trade candy and stash the rest for later.

Halloween is one of my favorite childhood memories. I hope my kids get to experience that same magic someday: dressing up, exploring the neighborhood, and coming home with a bag full of candy!
