๐ Public Facilities in America
๋ฏธ๊ตญ์ ๊ณต๊ณต์์ค
One of the most surprising things to me about Korea was how clean many public facilities are. Public bathrooms are typically well-maintained and fully stocked with toilet paper, and the subway in Seoul is spotlessโno graffiti or trash in sight. I was even more shocked during a recent visit to my apartment complex gym. People were powering off the treadmills and wiping down machines they hadnโt even used! It was totally different from America.

If youโve ever visited a public restroom in the U.S., you might be surprised by how dirty some of them can be. Worse still, thereโs often no toilet paper or even mirrors. This is because vandals often break the mirrors, which is why some public restrooms in the U.S. donโt have mirrors at all anymore. I want to clarify that this isnโt because all Americans are careless or disrespectful. In fact, most Americans are quite considerate of public spaces. But it only takes a few troublemakers to create a mess for everyone else. So, why does this happen in the U.S.?

There are a few reasons why public places in the U.S. arenโt as well-maintained. First, Americans tend to prioritize private spaces over public ones. While most people keep their homes clean and tidy, they might litter or make a mess in public areas because they feel less personal responsibility for those spaces. In a highly individualistic culture like the U.S., thereโs less social pressure to maintain shared spaces.

Second, thereโs often a lack of enforcement. While signs might tell people not to litter or damage property, itโs rare to hear of anyone being punished for vandalizing or making a mess. Many public places in the U.S. donโt have surveillance cameras, so vandals are rarely caught.

Finally, I think part of the issue is that many Americans arenโt taught how to care for public spaces. In Korea, there are constant educational campaigns on the subway and other public spaces, reminding people to be respectful of their environment. But in the U.S., such education isnโt as prevalent. Parents and teachers often donโt spend much time teaching kids about taking care of public areas, which can lead to less awareness and accountability. While public spaces in the U.S. may not always be as clean or well-maintained as those in Korea, itโs important to remember that most Americans donโt like the situation either. It's a cultural challenge that many people are working to address.
